- What's On
31st August 2016
Welcome to the 40 Days of Prayer at the start of the new academic year!
Monday 12th September to Friday 21st October
A new academic year…new opportunities…new challenges
At City Hope we are kicking the year off with the theme:
‘Being the People of God in a post-Christian society’
The Bible tells us that Christians “shine out like stars in the universe” (Philippians 2 v15) but what is it that makes us distinct? What is it that makes us ‘shine out’?
One answer could be that ‘the people of God are a praying people’, or at least we are called to be!
Recently at City Hope we have had some fantastic times praying in the prayer room during our 36 hours of prayer period, as well as our regular
Wednesday evening and Saturday morning Advance prayer meetings.
The 40 days is another way to help give focus to our prayers as a church and this prayer diary gives a prayer suggestion to use each day for the whole period.
The people of God pray! It is what we do and who we are - we talk and listen to our wonderful God and Saviour. The hope is that this prayer diary will help you join with others in the church as we seek God’s blessing together.
The diary is given to fuel your personal prayer life (although that shouldn’t stop you using it to pray with others and in your Connect group).
We also want to meet together to pray, and we have a number of
opportunities to do so during the 40 days of prayer.
Please think about fasting on one or more of the days during the 40 day period.
Jesus fasted 40 days when he was in the wilderness preparing for his public ministry.
It might not be the case that any of us fasts from food for 40 days but it would be encouraging to think that during the 40 day period someone in City Hope is fasting and praying each day as we prepare for the year ahead.
OVERVIEW OF THE PRAYER DIARY
Days 1-5: Praying through the Lord’s Prayer
Days 6-11: Church Vision - Praying about what God has called us to do locally
Days 12-25: Kingdom and Society - Praying we would be salt and light everywhere
Days 26-30: Using some of Paul’s prayers in the Bible
Days 31-36: Global Mission - praying for our friends around the world
Days 37-40: Revival in the UK
If you haven't yet got a prayer diary, you can pick one up on Sunday.
On Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th the upstairs hall at Drummond will be open for prayer from 6:30am - 9:30pm.
We will gather specifically to pray together on each day at:
7:00am-8:00am and 8:00pm-9:30pm.

18th December 2015
In January City Hope has a week of prayer to kickstart the New Year with prayer, something we want to continue doing through the whole of 2016 (click here for a plan of the whole week). Here is an overview of some of the ways we are going to 'stir up prayer' at City Hope.
Monthly Prayer Meetings
We will continue to have monthly prayer meetings on a Wednesday evening (normally the 1st Wednesday of the month), starting in February. We will also have a Saturday morning prayer meeting following each Wednesday. Connect communities and groups will not meet that week to give everyone a chance to come and pray. We will, however, be praying for the communities and groups at each meeting - make sure you are there to pray for yours!
On a number of Sundays throughout the year we will be speaking on the topic of prayer. Often we will be looking at some of the prayers Paul writes down in his letters to churches, found in the New Testament. We will also be using those prayers as fuel for our own monthly prayer meetings.
Throughout the year please use the hashtag #CHCadvance on social media to communicate your stories of God’s Kingdom advancing, receive encouraging prayer quotes and find out when the next meeting is.
36 hours of continuous prayer!
From 9am on Friday 5th February to 9pm on Saturday 6th February City Hope will be praying for 36 hours straight! Breaking the time down into 1 hour prayer slots we will be looking for people to come and pray in our building on Drummond Road as part of a prayer relay that leaves no hour left 'unprayed'! We hope many of you are up for the 4am Saturday morning slot. This intense period of prayer, calling on God for his Kingdom to break out in South London will surely be a great spiritual advernture for us which yields God's blessing on many people's lives.
1st December 2015
Back in September 2015 City Hope embarked on ‘40 days of prayer’ which included an intense week of prayer right at the beginning. This was a great way of stirring up prayer, both corporate and individual, in the church. In January we have another week of prayer (not ‘40 days’ though) to encourage us all to gather together and seek God. There is plenty of opportunity for every one of us to get along to something. Please stir your heart, spirit and body and get along to a meeting or two! A pdf timetable of the week is available here.
We are encouraging people to plan a day or more of fasting alongside praying during the week. If you have never fasted before why not try skipping one meal. Get together with others to fast - this encourages you to finish what you start!
Prayer Meeting Venues
Unless otherwise stated overleaf all the prayer meetings will be at our building on Drummond Road (SE16 2JY).
3rd, 10th & 17th January: Sunday sermons
On the Sundays running up to and just after the week of prayer we will have a sermon series based on Paul’s prayer found in 1 Thessalonians 3 v9-13. We will also be praying this prayer ourselves during the week.
Family Prayer Meeting for primary school aged children (Wed 13th, 3.45pm-4.30pm)
Please come straight from school. Doors will be open from 3.20pm and refreshments will be available. A great opportunity for our children to be involved with the week of prayer. Adults must stay to supervise their children.
1st September 2015
After a great Summer meeting back at our building on Drummond road (with some excellent sermons being given) City Hope will be back at HAB from the 6th September. On this day we will be launching our 40 days of prayer, a season for the church to be especially 'seeking first his Kingdom and his righeousness' at the start of the academic year. It will be great to see as many people as possible there on the 6th as we launch into this season of prayer and seeking God.
The 40 days run from Monday 7th September to Friday 16th October. We start with an intensive week with a number of planned prayer meetings across the week. It is not expected that many (if any) will get to everything during the week but hopefully everyone will get to at least one meeting, if not more. The remainder of the 40 days will have a few prayer meetings and a diary with suggestions for prayer and the dates of all the meetings will be given out on the 6th. Below is a list of those meetings.
