We are Christians Against Poverty

"We are passionate about releasing people in our nation from a life sentence of debt, poverty and its causes. Working with the church we bring good news, hope and freedom"

These stirring lines are taken from the Christians Against Poverty's (CAP) website and reflect the passion and faith of this wonderful organisation. On Wednesday 24th September Paul Brown, Sue Ferret and Vic Wilson attended CAP's United Conference to hear stories and up to date news of their work.

“This is the kind of fast day I’m after: to break the chains of injustice, get rid of exploitation in the workplace, free the oppressed, cancel debts. What I’m interested in seeing you do is: sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families." (Isaiah 58 v6-7)

This was the passage that John Kirkby (CAP founder) spoke to church leaders from in the final session of the conference. It was a fitting end to a great day to take on board again God's desire for his people to reach out to the lost, hurting and lonely around them: not just with words but in deed. How challenging is that?!

Earlier on, Matt Barlow (Chief exec for CAP UK) gave a report on the breadth of CAP's work in the UK. It was quite staggering to hear what CAP is accomplishing and not just a little encouraging. This year alone hundreds have been saved and thousands have been set free from debt; many who were suicidal and at rock bottom are now full of joy and life.

Alongside CAP's on the ground work they are also a strong Christian voice in the national media and to government on many issues around poverty and injustice.

"One of my conference highlights was hearing the stories of two clients whose lives have been completely turned around since finding Jesus and getting out of dept. Both had previously been suicidal from life's pressures but now you could see new life shining out of them" (Sue Ferret, CAP Centre Manager)

City Hope's CAP Work
City Hope is proud to have been partnering with CAP for the past 7 years. Since those early days we now also run regular CAP money courses and a Trussell Trust foodbank that links with our debt advice work. Over 50 people have been set free from the bondage of debt with another 20 clients currently making progress - praise God!

If you would like to get involved with CAP then why don't you come along to the 'Big Thank You' event on Friday 17th October, 7:30pm at Drummond Road. During an evening of cheese, wine and cake you will hear stories of what God has been doing and be inspired to get involved yourself. Please contact Sue Ferret to book your place (

Prayer: Father, thank you that you are a God of compassion and comfort. Please bless our work with CAP so that many more people can be free of their debt of money and sin. Amen.
