Our History

City Hope Church was formed in April 2004. For many years it had been known as Vineyard Community Church, but in autumn 2003 The Vineyard UK group of churches asked us to consider changing our name. We had felt in God that 2004 was to be a year of surprises for us and this was to be one of them.

Our church history is one that we are proud of. In 1985 Vineyard Community Church was formed when Drummond Road Baptist Church joined Bermondsey Christian Fellowship. The latter was formed only five years earlier when Lansdowne Medical Mission joined Union Chapel; all three churches had long and distinguished histories. Union Chapel can trace its independent, non-conformist roots back to 1700, Lansdowne Medical mission was originally a ragged school formed by the influence of the Christian social reformer, Lord Shaftesbury. Drummond Road Baptist Church was planted by C.H. Spurgeon from the Metropolitan Tabernacle in 1865, indeed he preached the first sermon there on its opening day. City Hope Church now meet in the building that fomerly belonged to Drummond Road Baptist Church.

Our desire is to continue in the traditions that have shaped us as City Hope, also to bring contempary, charismatic, evangelical Christianity to the inner city.  Like those that went before us we want to see the inner city transformed by the power of the gospel.

A visual display of the history of the church can be seen by visiting the Drummond Road Christian Centre where we meet.

City Hope’s desire is to continue in the great traditions that have formed it and bring Christianity to the inner city of London
